Understanding Multigrade Education: A Historical Perspective
Multigrade education, where a single teacher instructs students across multiple grade levels in one classroom, has deep historical roots. Initially prevalent in one-room schoolhouses, this approach has evolved to address diverse educational needs, especially in rural and remote areas. Today, multigrade settings are recognized for fostering personalized learning and community bonds. Understanding this history helps appreciate the adaptability and resilience of multigrade education in meeting various educational challenges.

By fostering close-knit learning communities, multigrade education plays a pivotal role in bridging educational gaps in underserved regions. --- ERASMUS+ PROGRAMME KA2 Partnerships for Cooperation - Small-Scale Partnerships Project number 2023-2-IT02-KA210-SCH-000180559 SIMUL - Stimulate Innovative MUltigrade Learning with STEAM Education If you are interested in learning more about Multigrade learning with STEAM education, join us at https://www.simul-erasmusplus.net
21 may 2024 ERASMUS+ PROGRAMME KA2 Partnerships for Cooperation - Small-Scale Partnerships Project number 2023-2-IT02-KA210-SCH-000180559 SIMUL - Stimulate Innovative MUltigrade Learning with STEAM Education . Partners met today for the online meeting of the Erasmus+ Project SIMUL - Stimulate Innovative MUltigrade Learning with STEAM Education. The partnership is: LP Associazione Lumen APS Italy, PP1 Istituto Comprensivo Francesco Berti Italy, PP2 Scoala Gimnaziala "Marcus Aurelius"Creaca Romania PP3 European Center of Entrepreneurship Competence & Excellence Austria PP4 Odpovědná společnost, z. s. ReS Czech Republic . The SIMUL project aims to support teachers and students engaged in a Multigrade Classroom Implementation (MCI) to strengthen STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) skills and promote digital literacy and environmental sustainability. The term "Multigrade Classroom Implementation" (MCI) is used in literature to refer to educational settings related to multigrade or combined classes, where students of different ages and grades are engaged in a single physical class, facing varying levels of complexity in learning. Although the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) approach has shown positive responses in teaching and learning mathematics and scientific subjects, it can be even more valuable in multigrade contexts, replacing traditional frontal lessons. Learning through the STEAM approach is based on interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary methods, recognizing interactions between subjects and the complexity of reality. study aims to analyze the graphical comprehension of 5 th and 6 th grade students in multigrade rural primary education in Chile. The theoretical framework considers levels of reading and semiotic levels in statistical graphs. A qualitative methodology of descriptive level is followed, using content analysis method for the responses given to a questionnaire by 22 students from five multigrade rural schools. The results show that, overall, students do not encounter difficulties in answering questions at level 1 reading (literal reading), but difficulties gradually increase as the reading level increases. Regarding semiotic levels, difficulties arise in constructing graphs using data distribution (semiotic level 3) and completing a graph with two data distributions (semiotic level 4).
